Myself and PR

For those of you out there who I have not had the opportunity to cross paths with, first let me introduce myself.  My name is Trent Gerber and I attend the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.  I am a junior Public Relations major Safety Minor with and emphasis in fire prevention.  The aspiration of my life is to become a full-time firefighter and to help save the cherished gift of life.  Some may ask why I would want to be a firefighter and ,rightfully so may, why I am attending a four year university in order to do such.  It's a simple answer to both questions.  First I will address why I aspire to be a firefighter.  My dad has been a volunteer for my hometown fire department for almost 32 years now.  I grew up being down at the station for numerous things, whether it be a call or a truck check or simply to wash his gear.  I was ALWAYS down at the fire station.  Coming out of high school I knew I wanted to attend a four year university, so I put firefighting on the after burner.  After doing some research I realized it was still possible to gear my degree toward firefighting, so that is where I am today.  Please do me the honor of following me!

  1. Nice to meet you Trent! We also met last night at the BMA while we sat and waited for our rides. I loved reading your blog. I can relate a lot to your experience down at the fire station. My dad is also a volunteer firefighter in Fort Atkinson and was on the sqaud for 40 years. My older brother and I were constantly at the fire department on the weekends with my Dad. I used to dispatch the trucks when I was younger, I even got to go on call once (I thought this was one of the coolest things when I was younger). I look up to my Dad so much. This is not a career many people can do. It was so scary growing up having my Dad's pager go off in the middle of the night and having him leave always thinking of the possibilites. He retired after the garage of a burning house fell on him and injured his back. It was very cool reading about your passion for this career and I would like to thank you for your service. Coming from my own experience it is a very scary career but one of the most honorable careers also. Good luck to you!
